Our Journey

The Generous and the Grateful was founded in June 2017 by Carmen Platt, when she noticed a real gap for people facing extreme adversity to access material aid, and the difference it could make to their ability to recover with dignity and one day thrive.


From her time volunteering with Mums4Refugees, Carmen saw agencies supporting refugees and people seeking asylum in many important ways, although she was surprised by the long delays between people being offered housing and then receiving the key items needed to make it a real home. At the time, on average people were spending 35 nights sleeping on the floor, with nowhere safe to store their food or means to wash their clothes.


Carmen was overjoyed to meet Davida Sweeney (co-founder and COO) in early 2018, who was seeking ways to connect the incredible excess that exists all around us with need, as opposed to landfill. Both Carmen and Davida clearly saw how many generous people and businesses were wanting to share surplus items but did not know how to channel their goods effectively or how to reach out to people at their time of greatest need.


The Generous and the Grateful exists to bridge the gap and connect the incredible amount of supply with demand, for the benefit of all. By focusing on specific homewares, of high quality (items we all need and perhaps take for granted) such as a bed, fridge, washing machine, sofa and dining table; our recipients, some of the most vulnerable people in the community, can focus their time and energy on recovery.


From humble beginnings, with just a few volunteers and an old trailer, The Generous and the Grateful has now expanded to include over 50 volunteers; a small team of part time staff; a truck; a strong active board and two rent free warehouses in North Western Sydney. We also work with many wonderful businesses, private donors and partners in kind.  


So much good can be created from all forms of excess – property, expertise, products, time, strength, and, most importantly, heart. Kindness is the link that connects all our partners, our team, our clients, and our recipients. We all care, and know life is better when you feel seen and that there is someone to accompany you along a tricky bit of the path.




We have some big dreams – we are here to uplift people experiencing vulnerability so they may not just survive, but thrive. We are on a mission to ensure all those moving into housing have access to the bulky essentials that will make it a safe, comforting home. We know there is enough in this world, and that by connecting kindness, we all benefit.


In 2021, our team is focused on becoming more efficient through clever partnerships and technology so we can help more people who are vulnerable, complete more homes, relieve more caseworkers, all while helping the planet at the same time.


Specifically, we are doing to need better systems and processes, expert input, whitegoods partners and logistics support if we want to fulfil our dream of one day of sharing our model with other locations around Australia.
