The Generous and The Grateful was founded by Carmen Platt, a mother of two from Sydney. She is a professional photographer with a passion for rolling up her sleeves when she sees someone having a hard time.
Through her experience as an advocate in Mums4Refugees, Carmen realised that there was a clear need for key household goods in a hurry, and went about finding these goods through Facebook groups, Freecycle, Gumtree and the like; with the idea that if she could set up a safe home for someone, they could get on with rebuilding their lives more easily.
To be honest, she got angry – she saw so many people sleeping on bare floors, with no way to access the things so many of us have to share. “In this day and age in Australia? Not on my watch!” she says.
In her spare time Carmen travelled around Sydney with her trusty blue trailer finding used goods from generous people – sofas, fridges, bunkbeds, TV’s, warm blankets, bicycles, you name it. She then worked with Caseworkers to arrange delivery to those who had nothing; no beds to sleep on, no machine to wash in, no pots to cook in. Nothing. They were grateful.
Before long she became amazed and overwhelmed by the amount of great things on offer from kind hearted people, who were pleased to help out a fellow human in need, and excited to decrease landfill in the process.
Carmen quickly gained a loyal following of community members who loved what she was doing, and wanted to get involved. Hence The Generous and the Grateful was born in mid 2017.
In 2018 Davida Sweeney appeared, as if by magic and slid right in next to Carmen to lead this beautiful team and concept forward with her kind, thoughtful, calm, clever, environmentally minded manner. It’s hard to believe she was ever not here. Also a mama, to 3 gorgeous young guys and a sweet shy doggy too, Davida has a diverse career background most recently in film production!
